Tulum Vacation Guide
Approximately 2 hours drive from Cancun lies the small, yet ever growing town of Tulum, nestled beside the Caribbean ocean and a veritable paradise on earth. Tulum has three main attractive facets going for it. Firstly the small Pueblo inhabited by locals and frequented by tourists searching for the real Mexico. Next is the “Hotel Zone”, powdery white beach, boutique hotels, casitas and cabanas is what it’s all about here.
And thirdly and probably why 90 percent of people visit is the ancient, magical Mayan ruins, the biggest archaeological site to grace the shores of this pristine ocean.
About Tulum Mexico
Although not as big as Chichen Itza, the ruins at Tulum are no less amazing and have the added value of the spectacular surroundings of dense jungle and stunning beach as its backdrop. Tulum basically translates to “wall” in English and Tulum was built by the Maya as a walled city, a fortification against foreign invaders from the sea. Tulum is still home to around 60 structures of great cultural and historical importance and, considering their age, are very well preserved. You can tour the ruins in around 2 hours, but I recommend you to get there at 8 am when they open to the public, as it can get extremely busy, alternatively wait until the end of the day.
The hotel zone of Tulum is a different vibe again, from both Americanized Cancun and ultra chic European Playa del Carmen. Tulum leans more towards the rustic kind of life, not to say your not going to have luxury if you want it, but in style and feel it is more “Robinson Crusoe-esque”, with the beach lined with low lying resorts, beach cabins and casitas, admittedly many of the foresaid Tulum hotels have there own private Jacuzzis and pools, but, well you get the idea.
The town of Tulum is still relatively small, and mostly inhabited by locals, there are however many lovely little restaurants a few gift shops and plenty of chance to practice your Spanish. If you are coming to Tulum then don’t miss the town out as it is a good place to meet the indigenous people of the area, who are willing to help and full of information.
All in all Tulum is well, hard to describe in words, seeing is believing that such a paradise does still exist.
