About Isla Mujeres
There is evidence that the ancient Maya visited Isla Mujeres, however historians suspect it was only on pilgrimages and that the Maya never actually lived there. It must have been of some surprise for Francisco Hernandez Cordova when he landed here, in 1517, to find the beaches covered with figurines of women, hence this tropical paradise became known as Isla Mujeres, which translates to Island of Women.
Before tourists began to arrive in the 1950’s other occupants included pirates in the 17th century and it was also used as a military base in World War II, personally I can’t think of a better place to be stationed than Isla Mujeres!
If you don’t want the hustle and bustle of Cancun, then I would seriously consider booking one of the many Isla Mujeres hotels. It’s true island life, perfect for relaxing and generally taking life at a slower pace. Not say there isn’t plenty of activities and nightlife to enjoy as well!
The island is around 7km long and 650 meters wide of pure paradise. Tourism in the main source of income these days for the island, but it has still managed to retain its small island charm. It’s easy to get to from Cancun. There are numerous ferries departing from various ports, the main one being in Puerto Juarez. If you are going to have your vacation on Isla Mujeres, there are lots of hotels to choose from, from reasonable to the more up market boutique hotels, hostels to 5 star resorts there is something for every budget. There is no need for car rental; the best way to get around is like the locals, on scooter or golf cart, there are over 500 golf carts on the island!!
The beaches of Isla Mujeres are probably the main attraction and there are plenty to choose from. The side of the island that faces the mainland has much calmer waters than the “windward” shore. The most popular beach is Playa Norte, however, there are other choices such as Playa Indios, Playa Paraiso and Hacienda Gomar. All the beaches have facilities, food and drinks, and tropical fruits!! Remember to take your snorkeling gear as Isla mujeres is home to the second largest reef in the world, behind the great barrier reef of Australia.
So to conclude if you are looking for the quintessential small island vacation, a beautiful boutique hotel, the best diving in the Americas and a lot, lot more then book you vacation to Isla mujeres today.
