Holbox Mexico Vacation and Hotel Guide
Located off the Northern coast of the Yucatán peninsula Holbox is one of the few remaining secrets north of Cancun. A small vacation paradise, only 12km long and 1.5 km wide, Holbox epitomizes everything an Island vacation should be: unspoilt deserted beaches, an abundance of flora and fauna, boutique hotels and pure undisturbed relaxation!
Holbox Mexico Vacation Guide
Holbox island has not yet succumb to mass tourism and the primary industry still remains fishing. Many of the population who live there full time are descendants of the 8 original families of Holbox, who are an interesting mix of pirates, who came in the 15 Century, and the Maya who were already living there. The population today tops out around the 1600 mark, not icluding the tourists on vacation.
To get to Holbox it's necessary to take a ferry from Chiquila, a town north of Cancun. Recently a company from Cancun built an airstrip there and fly people from Cancun to Holbox in a 5 seater Cessna plane. Unlike Isla Mujeres and Cozumel, and definitely unlike Cancun, there are no high rise hotels on Holbox. The majority of Hotels are rustic boutique hotels, this is not to say that many don't have all the modern amenities necessary for modern life, but they all are built with that rustic island charm.
The beaches are perfect for swimming, snorkeling and diving and of course sunbathing on the white powdery sand, a palm tree for shade. Many of the hotels have pools and Jacuzzis and I've heard they make the best Pina Coladas in the whole of Mexico here on Holbox! Just like a vacation should be, life on the island is slow, there isn't many cars in fact most of the traffic consists of golf carts and bicycles, even the taxis are golf carts. Should you want to rent one for yourself, there are companies that provide this service, and also rent scuba gear, bikes and snorkeling equipment. The restaurants here predominately serve seafood and fish, caught straight from the sea to your table; you can't get fresher than that. If you book you vacation to Holbox, book your flight to Cancun (cun), as this is the international airport of the region, then travel on to Holbox. Holbox is not a place for excitement, wild parties and spring breakers, it's a tropical island paradise where life is slow, relaxing is the order of the day, a place to feel at one with nature.
