The Mayan called the Island “Ah Cuzamil Peten” or place of the swallows, because of the annual swallow migration from Florida. The Spanish and Pirates that frequented the island simplified it to Cozumel.

Cozumel is the largest island in the whole of Mexico, just off the coast of Playa Del Carmen. It’s only 64kmlong and 14km wide. The Mayan Indians used to make the crossing in open canoes, as a pilgrimage to the mother goddess Ixchel, and her shrine to this day still exists!

The people of Cozumel are said to be the happiest in the Caribbean, they are a fascinating blend of Maya, Spanish and swashbuckling pirates, farmers and fishermen. Truly an interesting fun loving group of people.

Getting to Cozumel is fun in itself and your fist taste of Island adventure. After you arrive at Cancun International Airport (cun) there are a few options.
One is to take a ferry from Puerto Juarez, north Cancun, to Isla Mujeres, then here to Cozumel. Alternatively, and probably the easiest, is to Go from either Playa del Carmen or take the Car ferry from Puerto Morelos. If you don’t have a car Si Cancun works with the most reputable company in Airport Shuttles, you can book a private car for you and your party or the more economical choice and a good way to meet some friends is to take the shared mini van.
